Harnessing the Power of Plants

Symbioscience: The interconnectedness of All Things

Plants are an important source of bioactive compounds that have the potential to improve human health. Known as phytonutrients, these natural plant compounds are being investigated for their roles in providing protection against cardiovascular disease, several common cancers, premature aging and other chronic diseases.

Mars Botanical is a world leader in the science of flavanols – one type of phytonutrient found in cocoa beans, tea, wine, nuts and certain fruits and vegetables. As a newly established scientific division of Mars, Incorporated, Mars Botanical will build on Mars Incorporated’s 15-year heritage of scientific leadership related to the study of cocoa flavanols – a distinct group of compounds within the flavonoids family. Cocoa flavanols have been widely studied for their vascular benefits, which hold tremendous potential for reducing cardiovascular disease risk.

Mars Botanical will continue to invest in scientific research along side scientists and colleagues at leading research institutions, including Harvard University and the University of California-Davis. We are all dedicated to unlocking the full nutritional and medical potential of cocoa flavanols. As global leaders in cocoa science, Mars has been involved in more than 100 peer-reviewed studies on cocoa and holds more than 30 patents related to cocoa.
